What Not to Do in an Escape Room (and How to…

An escape room is the perfect place to unleash your inner Sherlock Holmes. But even the smartest detectives can sometimes get stuck because of a few classic mistakes.

1. TRYING TO DO EVERYTHING AT ONCE

The idea of running around the room like crazy and investigating everything at once might sound efficient, but you’ll probably end up with a big mess.

Before you know it, you’re looking for a key that someone else already put in their pocket.

How to do it better: Work in pairs, talk to each other, and share what you find. Teamwork makes the dream work!

2. MAKING IT TOO DIFFICULT FOR YOURSELF

We get it: you want to look smart. But not every puzzle has a deep, philosophical solution.

Sometimes a key is just for… a lock.

How to do it better: Start with the simple solutions. Usually, it’s not the Da Vinci Code.

3. REPEATING EVERYTHING THAT’S ALREADY BEEN TRIED (OR: REINVENTING THE WHEEL)

Know that colleague who asks the same question three times? Yeah, that.

If a code didn’t work before, it’s not suddenly going to magically work. That key? It still won’t fit.

How to do it better: Create a spot where you place used keys and codes. This way your team stays on track.

4. OVERLOOKING THE SMALL DETAILS

In your excitement (read: panic), you sometimes walk right past a puzzle that was just too obvious to miss.

A key still in a lock, a hint on the wall… oops!

How to do it better: Take a minute to just look around. Those little things often make all the difference.
